Take Fifteen: The Accountant 2
Ben Affleck returns for another go as the title character in this sequel as a Christian Wolffe, an autistic forensic accountant tasked with finding the murderer of an assassain. Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is a former acquaintance of said assassain (played by J.K. Simmons) who dies of very mysterious circumstances. All they know is, a mysterious woman (played by Danella Pineda) is somehow connected. Christian elists the aid of his estranged brother, Braxton (Jon Bernthal) who is still very much in the asssaain react to get to the bottom of things.
It has been a while since I saw the first Accountant. In all honesty, I don’t remember much about it at all, except the fact that I know I liked it A LOT. This one does not disappoint. Affleck is extremely convincing in the role and the addition of Bernthal is fantastic. They two together have great chemistry and are fun to watch playing off of each other.
It has the same feeling as a good buddy movie of the 80s. The movie is just a good time through and through. You really enjoy these characters just hanging out, doing what they do. They ARE the movie. The plot is really secondary.
The plot is fine. Nothing particularly mind-blowing. We do get the original story of an antihero (in a movie full of them) which almost feels like something taking from a comic book. If you’ve read it, you can probably guess which I am referring to. There is even a twist just past the midway point. Although I feel as though little becomes of it, it’s there at least. The action and fun of the rest more than make for it, so no complaints.
My score: A nine. It’s everything you want in a summer blockbuster. It’s an entertaining ride and it makes me want to revisit the first, but like that one, I am sure it probably won’t’ stick with me for long which is the only reason I’m not giving it a 10.
Until next time, go ahead and crunch your own numbers and tell me what you thought of it in the commons…
