Take Eighteen: Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning

Mission: Impossible2- The Final Reckoning picks up where Dead Reckoning left off. Special Agent Ethan Hunt and his team are in a race against The Entity, a malevolent A.I. that threatens to destroy the world. Joined by new allies, Ethan must contend with mistakes from his past and he accepts (one last?) mission.

I rewatched Dead Reckoning prior to seeing this one in order to avoid confusion here. Wasted effort. This one goes all the way be to the very beginning. Unfortunately, as much as I have enjoyed this series, I can’t say that I have revisited many of these films multiple times with the exception of #2. Yes, it was cool seeing the numerous scenes and references to past films and I really want to rewatch the whole thing in the near future, but as I was in the theater, I was at the mercy of the film to jog my memory about a lot. Fortunately, it’s not enough to really take you out of it.

With this and the 007 series, you kinda of expect a lot of crazy gadgets. You don’t really get that here. You expect crazy action scene and you get them here. There are two especially long set pieces, one in the Russian sub, the other in biplanes that sum up this movie: kind cool, but a little drawn out and over the top. This one feels LONG. I will admit, the outcome of at least one of these did leave me a little anxious. As the last Bond showed us, in final movies, all bets are off (that was NOT intentional, I swear.) I really wasn’t sure if Ethan was going to make it out alive or not which did heighten the stakes and made it a little more interesting.

Although Tom Cruise and some of the people behind the film have hinted that this may or may not be the last of the films, the care and love shown towards the entire series was apparent and nice to see and this does seem to be a logical place to end.

Speaking of logical places to end, my score. I liked it okay, but gotta say, it probably felt the most “whelming” —- I wanted to be blown away but can’t say I was completely. But it did make me want to revisit the previous ones. It might bolster my appreciation for this one. But as it stands, I’m giving this one a 7.5.

Now, your mission, should you choose to accept it, I reckon, is to have the final say and tell us what YOU thought of Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning…

Until next time…
