Take 90: Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibilty 2026 is the second film adaptation of the Jane Austin novel of the same name. It follows the Dashwood sisters—Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles), and young Margaret, and their mother (Caitríona Balfe) as they have to pivot after the abrupt death of their father leaves them in tight financial straits. No longer able to live the life of privilege they are accustomed to, they have to downsize and rely on the kindness and generosity of relatives like Sir John Middleton (Turlough Convery) and Mrs. Jennings (Fiona Shaw). Although there is a good deal of romance, it really revolves around the sisterly relationship between the sensible Elinor and the emotional, free-spirited Marianne.
I tried ya’ll, I really did. Let me start off by saying that I was still recording from cold/allergies so wasn’t 100% going into this one. I was hesitant even going, but it was do or die. Even now, I am working on this from Myrtle Beach- a movie was not possible this week based on my schedule. At one point, I was hopeful that maybe, just maybe I’d be able to get another in because this one… this is gonna be rough. Pretty sure I was out of consciousness more than I was in so what I got from it was spotty at best.
Whose idea was this to do as a Secret movie. I knew something was up when all of the trailers were for family friendly, animated movies. I figured I could possible make it though one of those at least. What would be be, an hour and 20? And hour and 30?
Two hours and elven minutes. Dangit. Was nice while that fantasy lasted.
The late 18th century England, whew! Can’t think of a much harder sell. I really have a hard time relating. It was an especially not great time for people like me and not an era I have much interest in, at all. This a perfect storm for a snooze, and baby, I did not disappoint.
To be fair, what I did see was actually pretty good. Having never read the novel, I wasn’t sure of what to expect and knew exactly what to expect at the same time. I had seen most of the most recent Little Women. I liked it from what I managed to stay awake for, it this is just Melatonin for me. I realize these just aren’t for me. Not to say it’s bad. Just not my jam. Can’t blame it. I can blame the people that decided to make this a secret movie on a Monday night evening…
So yeah. Here is my first official non review. I don’t even fair giving a rating so I will just leave it alone. Perhaps I can revisit at some point (but probably not…)
So, maybe one of you can offer some sense and sensibility to me, because I am clueless. School me in the comments. I will try to do better going forward, ya’ll. Until next time, exercise some sense and sensibility of your own….
