Take 83: It Ends
That was so bizarre. What exactly did I just watch? A lot of, but not much at the same time. Just so… Whuh?
Trying a different approach this week. Typically, I take e notes as I am watching whatever move and though I KNOW I should write closer to having viewed it, but life just doesn’t often allow. But rather than rely on my notes, I want to get as much of my gut reaction out as possible.
Cinemark doesn’t really seem to have much rhyme or reason to when they do these, and if they do, I am certainly not privy to it. They JUST had one last week and here we go again. Early on, they seemed to skew more horror centric. My last couple had not been so I kind of went in expecting this one to be horror for sure. That’s a big part of the fun of going in totally blind. I suspected horror, but the way this started, I just wasn’t sure. There is a lot of quippy dialogue at the beginning with what appear to be late teens or very early twenties There are moments that could e construed and anxious but could also be deemed just plain awkward. They let it breathe a bit. I didn’t even get the title right away. But the time the title card is finally revealed, I know exactly what type of movie It Ends will be… or do I?
It ends essentially revolves around four friends in a car. It’s an odd collection, made up of people you wouldn't necessarily see together which I liked and They are all flawed and not particularly the most likable. Their dialogue is very biting, almost cruel, but fortunately, that does play into the overall plot. They are driving one night down a two-lane road. And they are conversing, they notice there is no turn in sight, despite GPS insisting one is coming. They liberally drive all night, but nothing. Oddly enough, they notice the has tank is perpetually stuck at a quarter tank, they aren't hungry, and they are requiring sleep.
As time goes, it just continues getting stranger. There is an ominous air thst drives the film (no pun intended) but surpr, there isn’t a ton in the way of action or violence. It took me to another film, on I really enjoy, Joyride that manages to do a lot with very little to create suspense. All th while, they are just trying to, like the audience, figure out exactly what is going on.
Unlike Joyride which had a pretty straight forward plot this one is a lot more ambitious. Point for that, but can’t say it's all that successful. It really wants to be deep and existential but for me, it was just confusing and raises several questions but answers none. I always try to avoid spoilers but to be honest, there isn’ta lot to give away here. A more apt title might have been It JUST Ends. They hold so many cards to the chest. It has a short run time, only about ninety minutes, but about halfway through it feels like it’s been going on forever. Worth a watch just so you too can experience the mystery, but beyond that, no replay value for me at least.
