Take 63: Hunting Matthew Nichols

Before I get into this one which is gonna be a little odd, I wanna say I am really going to have to be purposefully vague in my commentary because the less you know you know going into this one the better. I made the mistake of Googling early on because I was wondering about something and I REALLY wish I hadn’t because it really colored my viewing of the movie going forward. Since I want to avoid spoilers, this one is probably gonna be a lot shorter than usual…

Hunting Matthew Nichols is a Canadian, found-footage documentary and horror film that centers around the 2001 disappearance of, you guessed it, Matthew Nichols. Two decades later and still with no answers, his sister Tara ( portrayed by Miranda MacDougall) starts an investigation which is being documented by director Markian Tarasiuk (who appears as himself. As the documentary in underway, it is soon discovered that Matthew’s disappearance might be connected to something less than routine, perhaps even a little supernatural.

This movie was another Secret Movie Series film for me and was one that I never even heard of. When it started, I groaned a bit. I don’t have anything against documentaries, but I have to be in the mood for one. To my surprise, this was pretty enjoyable. Being a documentary, it’s not the most action packed. That said, when there was action, boy, was it effective. It’s defintely eerie and creepy.

Again, with this film, the less you know going in, the better. I’m going to wrap it up here in an effort not to give away too much. I will say that I was fairly entertained. Not the greatest cinematic experience I’ve had recently, but definitely worth a watch. My score: 7.4.

I continue to be Hunting for Comments. If you have them, please drop them here. Really. And until next time…
