Take 47: Zootopia 2
The partner ship between Officer July Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) continues in Zootopia 2. This time, the crimefighting duo find themselves investing a case involving Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Quan) which threatens everything the inhabitants of Zootopia believe they know about their origin and the place the reptiles have in the social hierarchy. Hoops and Wilde find themselves on the run, teaming up with with unexpected allies in an attempt to get to the bottom of a mysterious cover-up.
Another great cast comes together for this one. Reprising their roles are Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Shakira, as Gazelle, and Nate Torrence as officer Clawhauser, and others. Joining Goodwin and Bateman are Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake and Fortune Feinstein as Nibbles Maplestick as well as Andy Samberg as Pawert Lynxley and David Strathairn as Milton Lynxyley among other. As the 64th entry in Disney Animated Canon, this is no surprise.
As I said last week,it feels like theaters are sequel heavy right now. I was hesitant to see this for that very reason until I realized that I actually had seen the first Zootopia. I didn’t remember much about the original, but I did feel an instant familiarity with the characters and the tone of the movie. It’s a globetrotting and it feels epic. There is definitely some Indiana Jones in the DNA here and even an Easter egg that harkens to it here. It really does feel like big budget Hollywood action film, just told with 3D animation.
Definitely not just for kids. Yes, they are the target audience, but there is plenty for the older set too. There are some puns, but fortunately, the film does not rely too heavily on these. Most of the humor (and there is a lot of it) stems from the characters and their situations. There are even twists I honestly didn’t see coming. There is even a little will they, won’t they, Dave and Maddie vibe going. I get the hype. My score: 9.7
Will you or won’t you leave a comment? That’s the real question. And until next time…
